Chodds Farmhouse is a beautiful and historically significant property located in the village of Handcross, West Sussex, with origins dating back to the 1300s. As one of the oldest buildings in the area, the property carries with it a wealth of character, architectural detail and heritage value, all of which required careful consideration throughout the works.
PH Beck was appointed by the National Trust to carry out a full programme of internal and external refurbishment works, with the aim of transforming the property into a charming and welcoming holiday cottage. The challenge was to preserve and celebrate the historic fabric of the building, while sensitively introducing the modern comforts and finishes expected of a high quality holiday let.
Original features were retained and showcased wherever possible, including the historic floors, exposed timber beams, and a striking original fireplace dating back to 1690. These elements were thoughtfully combined with contemporary design touches to create a characterful interior that balances centuries of history with the practical requirements of modern-day guests.
All works were carried out with the care, skill and sensitivity required when working on a property of this age and significance, ensuring that Chodds Farmhouse can now be enjoyed by visitors for many years to come.
