As a long-standing framework contractor for Sussex Police, PH Beck was privileged to be invited to work in partnership with the force on this particularly meaningful project. The brief was to design and construct a dedicated memorial wall at the Sussex Police Headquarters in Lewes, created to honour the officers, staff and special constables who have lost their lives in the line of duty or during their service. From the outset, the project was treated with the sensitivity, care and respect that such a significant undertaking deserves.
The scope of works included:
In more detail, the existing paving was carefully broken up, excavated and removed from site. A new sub-base of MOT was laid, levelled and compacted before the installation of Marshalls Coach House style paving slabs, set out in a four stone pattern with a two to one split to achieve a subtle colour change. Trenches were then excavated for three curved feature screen walls to a depth of 600mm by 600mm, with concrete foundations and starter bars installed to ensure long-term stability.
The walls themselves were constructed using natural blue linear bricks, chosen for their quality and refined appearance. Ground mounted spotlights were installed to create a fitting and atmospheric effect when illuminated, and the memorial was completed with the installation of engraved polished brass plaques, each one dedicated to a fallen serviceman or servicewoman.
On completion of the works, a special memorial ceremony was held at the site. Floral wreaths were laid at the foot of the memorial, which now stands as a permanent place for remembrance, reflection and quiet tribute.
All PH Beck staff, along with our selected sub-contractors drawn from our approved supplier list, are police vetted, with a number holding NPPV Level 2 clearance. This enables us to mobilise and commence works on police premises quickly and efficiently, without the delay of awaiting vetting approval.
Over the course of the last decade, we have successfully delivered a wide range of projects across approximately 99% of Sussex Police stations. This has included the new reception and memorial wall at Lewes Police Headquarters, taser ranges at Kingstanding Training Centre, the installation of dog kennels at service users’ homes, and workshop repairs at Courtlands. Through this body of work, our team has developed a detailed understanding of how operational police stations function, along with the importance of minimising disruption, maintaining security and delivering consistently high quality workmanship.
This experience has equipped us to work confidently and collaboratively within the constraints posed by live, operational environments, planning carefully alongside the police service to ensure every project is delivered to the highest standard.
