Rudyard Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean were once part of The Elms, the home of the celebrated author Rudyard Kipling between 1897 and 1902. During his time there, Kipling famously rented the property for just three guineas a week. Today, the gardens are enjoyed by the public as a peaceful open space with a rich literary and architectural heritage, with the surrounding flint walls holding a Grade II listing. Due to the significance of the site, it was imperative that any repair works were carried out in a sympathetic manner, in keeping with the character and historic fabric of the gardens.
PH Beck was appointed to carry out a programme of repairs across various parts of the gardens, including the Rose Garden, a Pergola flint column, the Roger Nook flint wall, and associated repairs to the croquet lawn area. Great care and skill were required to carefully remove and rebuild sections of flintwork, salvaging and reusing original flints wherever possible, so that the completed works matched the surrounding walls as closely as possible.
Our scope of works included:
All works were carried out in accordance with good building conservation principles, and to the full satisfaction of the local authority conservation officer. Original flints were salvaged and reused wherever possible, with any new flints carefully selected to match the appearance of the existing walls.
Prior to commencement, all operatives involved in the project attended a detailed site induction which highlighted the historic nature of the site, the Grade II listed status of the flint walls, and the importance of working respectfully and in line with the agreed conservation approach.
The gardens remained open to the public throughout the duration of the works. As a result, careful planning was required to maintain a safe environment for visitors, with appropriate exclusion zones, signage and security measures in place at all times. Disruption was kept to an absolute minimum, ensuring that members of the public could continue to enjoy this much-loved green space while the repairs were sensitively carried out.
