Fordwater School in Chichester caters for pupils with severe and complex learning needs. The school is led by a committed team who are dedicated to delivering the highest standards of education and care, supporting pupils to self-regulate, and ensuring that every child benefits from a specially designed, personalised curriculum tailored to their individual needs. Their aim is to make the learning experience engaging and enjoyable, and it was a genuine privilege for PH Beck to work alongside such a dedicated team on a project that would make a tangible difference to the pupils.
The brief was to deliver and install a brand new mobile classroom on the school grounds. The unit itself was constructed off site at a specialist manufacturing facility, before being transported to Chichester and craned into its final position.
While the modular unit was being built, our team carried out the groundworks on site. This included forming large strip foundations and constructing new foul and surface water drainage, all of which had to be set out with exceptional accuracy, within a tolerance of two inches, to ensure the mobile classroom would align correctly once delivered. To achieve this level of precision, we held a number of virtual meetings with the modular construction company throughout the programme. These meetings were used to agree the overall layout of the classroom, the position of the drainage, fire and IT services, and the internal fit out, ensuring the finished space met the teachers’ specific requirements.
The pupils took great interest in watching their new classroom take shape, and at the end of the project they designed and made a thank you card for our Site Manager. It was a lovely gesture that reflected the positive relationship built with the school throughout the works.
